Spaces and rooms

In Jodu, a Space is the authored, measurable thing: a named area on one storey with a type, a boundary, and a footprint Jodu can measure. "Room" is the everyday word for the same idea — the Room tool creates Spaces.

What is the difference between a space and a room?

Inside the model, none — every room you place is a Space. Jodu uses the wider word because a Space does not have to be a closed indoor room. Balconies, verandahs, porches, sit-outs, terraces, courtyards, and parking bays are Spaces too: they have an area and a boundary, but some of their edges are deliberately open.

A Space belongs to exactly one storey and carries:

  • a name (e.g. "Bedroom 1");
  • a space type (see below);
  • a footprint — the polygon Jodu measures for area;
  • a boundary made of wall-backed, open, or archway edges — a sit-out's open side is part of the boundary, not a missing wall.

What is a space type?

The space type says what the space is for. It drives the room presets in the Room placement panel, the room area statement, and finish targeting in Finishes.

The picker groups the types:

GroupTypes
CommonLiving, Dining, Kitchen, Bedroom, Study, Dressing, Puja
Wet & serviceBath, Bath + WC, Toilet / WC, Utility, Store / Pantry
OutdoorBalcony, Verandah, Porch, Sit-out, Terrace, Courtyard, Parking
OtherFoyer / Entrance, Stair hall, Passage / Circulation, Other

The type is a label, not a cage — a placed Space can be renamed and re-typed later, and outdoor types still report an area so schedules and quantities can count them.

When does an area become a measurable space?

Only an authored Space counts. Two things on the canvas look similar but are not Spaces:

  • A dashed Enclosed area hint — walls you drew enclose a region and Jodu shows a provisional size on it, but it is a suggestion, not a Space. It has no name or type, does not appear in schedules or area statements, and cannot fulfil a Program need until you click it and choose Assign room.
  • A sketch room in a sketch — a piece on the sketch board, never measured building geometry until it is imported into a new project.

Once a Space exists, Jodu measures its footprint continuously: editing its boundary, or the walls around it, updates the area. Spaces feed the room area statement, carpet and built-up totals, finish coverage, and Program fulfilment.

Why do balconies and verandahs have an area?

Outdoor Spaces are measured for the same reason indoor ones are: a verandah's floor finish, a balcony's railing length, and a terrace's surface all come from the footprint. Giving a verandah the Verandah type instead of leaving it as unnamed outdoor area is what lets schedules, finishes, and the Program recognize it.
