Trim tool
Shortcut: X
Toolbar: Modify group
Trim edits wall topology. Press X, choose the mode in the visible Modify options, then provide the picks required by that mode.
Trim modes
| Mode | Picks | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Segment | Two cut points on a wall | Removes the wall segment between them |
| Extend | A wall end, then a target wall | Extends the end to the target |
| Split | One point on a wall | Divides the wall at that point |
| Open passage | Two edges of an intended opening | Creates a doorless hosted opening |
Use Passage when you want a standard doorless opening preset; use Trim's Open passage mode when you are already correcting wall geometry.
How do I trim a wall segment?
- Press X or choose Trim.
- Select Segment.
- Click the first cut point on the wall.
- Click the second cut point.
- Review and confirm any consequence preview.
The cut stays associated with the wall selected by the first pick. Near a crossing wall, the preview may offer a flush-to-face target; move away from it for a free cut point.
Why did Trim do something different?
Check the selected mode before picking. Trim does not use a Shift+click mode switch. Extend, Split, and Open passage each have different pick sequences, so a second click is not always a second cut point.
Why nothing happened
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A click does nothing | No wall is under the pointer | Move over the wall centerline |
| The cut jumps to another wall | The pointer is near a crossing wall face | Move back over the original wall |
| The points are rejected | The cut is too short or invalid for the selected mode | Move the point farther along the wall or choose another mode |
| An opening is not what you wanted | Open passage was selected instead of Segment | Choose Segment, or use Passage for a preset opening |
