Glossary
Common terms used across Jodu workspaces.
Site and plot
Plot The persisted site boundary you are building on. The current Site setup panel offers width and depth controls for the common editable rectangle case; surveyed or irregular plot geometry may have different editing limits.
Road side The plot side facing the road: Front, Rear, Left, or Right. It is set in Site setup → Plot. North angle is a separate orientation setting.
Neighbour edge A plot boundary adjoining another property. It is site evidence and may inform review or diagnostics; it is not a replacement for local setback verification.
Setback A project-entered distance between the plot boundary and the intended building area. Jodu can show the resulting buildable guidance; confirm local bylaws before issuing a design.
Buildable area The area indicated inside configured setbacks when the site geometry supports a verified envelope. Do not treat a missing or suppressed envelope as permission to build.
Area and planning terms
Carpet area The net usable floor area of an apartment or room, excluding the area covered by external and internal partition walls.
Built-up area (Plinth area) The total area covered by the building on a storey, including the carpet area plus the thickness of all external and internal partition walls and balconies.
Super built-up area The built-up area plus a proportionate share of common areas such as staircases, lift lobbies, corridors, and entrance verandas.
Setback The mandatory minimum open distance between the plot boundary and the building exterior face as required by local building bylaws.
Building structure & components
Storey (plural: storeys) A horizontal level of the building. A G+1 house typically has three storeys: Ground Floor (+0.0 m datum), First Floor (+3.0 m datum), and Terrace / Roof (+6.0 m datum).
Cut height The horizontal plane at which the 2D plan view is sliced — typically 1.2 m above the finished floor level, cutting through doors and windows to show room layouts.
Space A room or enclosed zone defined by surrounding walls, assigned a type (e.g. Living, Kitchen, Bedroom, Toilet) and area. Used to generate schedules and quantities automatically.
RCC Column A vertical structural member in reinforced cement concrete that transfers loads from beams and slabs down to the foundation footings.
RCC Beam A horizontal structural framing member that carries slab loads and transfers them to columns.
Isolated Footing An individual stepped or sloped reinforced concrete foundation pad supporting a single column.
Plinth Beam & DPC A reinforced concrete beam cast at ground level to tie columns together, topped with a Damp Proof Course (DPC) layer to prevent moisture rising into brickwork.
Lintel & Lintel Band A horizontal RCC beam over doors and window openings that supports the masonry wall above.
Chajja (Sunshade) A reinforced concrete projection cast above exterior window openings to protect against rain and direct sunlight.
Parapet & Railing A low protective wall or safety railing built along the edge of a roof, terrace, or balcony.
Walls and openings
Wall A straight vertical building element with a start point, end point, and thickness. Standard exterior brick walls are typically 0.23 m (230 mm / 9 inches); interior partition walls are 0.115 m (115 mm / 4.5 inches).
Opening A door, window, or passage placed on a wall centerline with predefined dimensions and type mark (e.g. D01, W01).
Passage An open doorless opening or archway in a wall that provides clear circulation between rooms.
Dimension A measured annotation showing exact distances between wall faces, opening centers, or grid lines.
Canvas interaction
Snap Automatic magnetic alignment to nearby useful geometry such as endpoints, midpoints, wall intersections, or the structural grid. Hold Ctrl during room drag to suppress snap.
Draft A real-time ghosted preview of walls, rooms, or openings before clicking to commit them.
HUD (heads-up display) A floating measurement and input box displaying live length, angle, or coordinates as you draw.
Corner close (C) A precision tool that automatically closes near-miss corner gaps between walls within 0.3 m (300 mm).
Trim (X) A multi-mode modifying tool that allows segment trimming, wall extending, wall splitting, or opening passages.
Workspaces and views
Project home The central hub for creating, opening, duplicating, and managing building projects.
Site The workspace for site-visit evidence, plot boundaries, road orientation, setbacks, and North angle.
Program An optional structured requirements brief defining room types, target areas, adjacencies, and priorities.
Sketch A standalone board for arranging rooms as pieces on a rectangular plot before drawing exact walls; New project from sketch turns it into a new project's plan once.
Plan canvas The primary 2D CAD authoring workspace for drawing exact walls, rooms, doors, windows, stairs, and structure.
Ask Jodu The in-app intelligent co-pilot that answers questions about your project dimensions, schedules, quantities, and drawing workflows.
Export and outputs
Schedules Traceable, automated tables extracted from the model, including Door & Window schedules, Room area statements, and Finish schedules.
BOQ (Bill of Quantities) An itemized material and labour take-off calculating concrete, masonry, steel, tiles, plaster, and paint with customizable contractor rate books and GST.
Material Statement Contractor-ready procurement quantities rolling up cement bags (50 kg), sand/aggregate brass (100 cu ft), and steel reinforcement tonnage (MT).
Sheet / PDF set A drawing-sheet composer workspace for assembling titled drawing sets with title blocks, scale bars, and north arrows on A3, A2, or A1 sheets.
3D House A 3D architectural visualization generated from the floor plan with materials and lighting for client presentation.
Indian residential terms
Common site and drawing terms, and the Jodu concept each maps to. Where a Jodu equivalent exists, that is the name panels and Ask Jodu recognize.
Sit-out / Verandah / Porch
A covered, partly open area at the house entrance or along an outside wall. Jodu offers three outdoor space types — Verandah, Sit-out, and Porch — pick the closest when placing the room.
Chajja / Chhajja (Sunshade)
The RCC projection above an exterior opening that blocks rain and sun — see Chajja (Sunshade) under Building structure above. Jodu authors it as an envelope element over the opening in the Facade aspect; it appears in the Envelope schedule and quantities.
Pooja room / Puja / Mandir / Prayer room
The worship space. Maps to the Puja space type (the "Puja" room preset).
Utility / Wash area / Service yard
The laundry or service space, often semi-open at the rear of the house. Maps to the Utility space type.
Mumty / Staircase headroom
The small cabin over a staircase that gives access to the roof. Jodu has no dedicated mumty element today — draw the enclosure as a Stair hall space with ordinary walls on the terrace level.
Parapet
The low wall or railing along a roof, terrace, or balcony edge — see Parapet & Railing above. Authored in the Facade aspect.
Plinth
The raised base of the building above ground level. In Jodu, set Plinth height in the Ground storey's level properties; the structural plinth beam is part of the Structure aspect. For the area term, see Built-up area (Plinth area) above.
Chowkhat / Door frame
The frame a door or window shutter sits in. Jodu does not draw the frame as a separate element — it is part of the door or window opening, and its material and width are properties of that opening.
